When Science Becomes Intuition

Information changes behavior when it becomes part of the framework through which we understand ourselves.

Knowing a fact is not the same as having a world in which the fact makes sense.

A person can learn that the Earth moves around the sun and still experience the sun as rising. She can understand that chronic restriction intensifies preoccupation with food and still interpret hunger as personal weakness. She can repeat that anxiety is a nervous-system response and still feel ashamed when her heart races.

Information often sits on top of an older framework without changing it.

This is why education alone so often fails to change behavior. We deliver facts as if the mind were an empty container and action followed automatically from correct content. But learners interpret new information through a lifeworld: the largely unexamined assumptions, bodily expectations, language, social meanings, and prior experiences that make reality feel obvious.

Adult learning theorist Jack Mezirow focused on the frames of reference through which adults interpret experience. Transformation begins when an existing frame can no longer adequately explain what is happening. A discrepancy appears. Something does not fit.

That moment can be uncomfortable. If I believe body weight is a simple record of discipline, evidence about genetics, adaptation, medication, sleep, trauma, food access, and endocrine regulation does more than add information. It threatens a moral structure. I may have used that structure to judge myself, distinguish myself from others, or maintain hope that perfect control will keep me safe. Letting go requires more than hearing the evidence once.

New knowledge must be rehearsed, tested, explained in one’s own words, and connected to lived experience. Over time, it becomes easier to retrieve. Neural pathways involved in the new interpretation become more available. What first required deliberate thought can begin to feel intuitive.

This is not the inheritance of scientific ideas through biological evolution. It is learning and cultural change occurring across lives and generations. Children raised in a world where microbes, evolution, and planetary systems are ordinary concepts begin from a different set of assumptions than children raised before those ideas entered daily language. Culture changes what a nervous system repeatedly encounters; repeated encounters shape what feels self-evident.

I believe our understanding of the body can change in this way. Today, dualism remains intuitive. We feel like minds controlling bodies. We feel as though choices appear from an independent will. We perceive health outcomes as personal accomplishments or failures. Scientific accounts may be intellectually accepted while the older story continues to organize emotion.

But imagine a culture in which children learn from the beginning that thoughts are bodily events, that organisms respond to conditions, that behavior has histories, and that dependence is not a defect. Imagine if hunger were taught as regulation rather than temptation; emotion as prediction and action-readiness rather than weakness; health as an interaction among biology, environment, resources, and care rather than a moral score.

Those children might not need to reason their way out of war with their bodies. Interdependence could become part of their gut feeling about what a person is.

This is one reason I teach pieces of science even when no patient needs to remember every step of a metabolic pathway. People do not need an advanced understanding of biochemistry to eat or care for themselves. The purpose is not memorization. A well-chosen piece of science can create a discrepancy in a harmful framework.

Someone may forget the names of hormones involved in appetite and retain the recognition that hunger is regulated. Someone may forget the details of stress physiology and retain the understanding that exhaustion changes what is possible. The factual detail helps lay down a more accurate story: my body is not capricious; it is responding.

For that story to hold, the learner must do something with it. She must compare it with her experience, explain it, question it, and test what it allows her to notice. This is where reflection and community matter. A person who can put an idea into her own words is no longer merely borrowing the educator’s language. She is beginning to reorganize her own frame.

The process is neither quick nor purely rational. Old interpretations are efficient because they have been rehearsed for years and reinforced by advertising, medicine, family, and social media. New interpretations impose cognitive and emotional cost. Under stress, the nervous system will often return to the familiar path.

That return is not failure. It is evidence about learning.

We build scientific intuition the same way we build other forms of intuition: through repeated embodied encounters. We notice hunger and respond. We observe what happens after restriction. We connect irritability with inadequate energy, not defective character. We encounter the old shame, name its history, and practice another explanation. With enough support and repetition, the new pathway becomes less expensive to use.

The aim is not to replace one rigid certainty with another. Scientific knowledge is provisional and revisable. The more deeply it enters the lifeworld, the more important intellectual humility becomes. “Science says” can become another form of authority used to silence experience. A scientific intuition worth building includes the expectation that claims require evidence, uncertainty matters, and our interpretations can be wrong.

The change I hope for is not a population reciting more facts. It is a culture whose ordinary assumptions are less hostile to bodies: one in which causation feels more natural than blame, interdependence more realistic than radical individualism, and curiosity more available than fear.
