After enough exposure to wellness advertising, vague language begins to feel normal. Products support, promote, balance, nourish, activate, reset, optimize, and transform. Ingredients are clean, premium, ancient, patented, clinically studied, physician formulated, and highly bioavailable. Customers are glowing. Numbers are everywhere.
The result is not information overload so much as conclusion overload. Consumers receive dozens of reasons to feel impressed without receiving the few details needed to decide.
This final article offers a way to reverse that process.
Begin with the exact claim
Do not start by searching whether the product “works.” Capture the exact sentence, image, testimonial, headline, and surrounding context. An advertisement can imply more than any single line states. A bottle labeled “supports normal glucose metabolism” may appear beside imagery, testimonials, or targeting that encourages consumers to interpret it as a diabetes treatment or weight-loss solution.
The Federal Trade Commission evaluates the net impression of an advertisement, including express and implied claims. Consumers can use the same principle. Ask what an ordinary viewer is likely to believe after seeing the whole presentation.
Then rewrite the claim as a testable statement. “Supports gut health” might become: “In adults with frequent bloating, one daily serving of this product reduces average bloating severity after eight weeks compared with placebo.” The rewrite exposes everything the original phrase omitted.
Identify the missing pieces
A usable health claim should allow you to identify at least six things:
- Product: Was the finished formulation tested, or only selected ingredients?
- Population: Who was studied, and do they resemble the people being targeted?
- Dose and duration: Was the tested amount the same as the amount being sold, used for long enough to evaluate the claim?
- Comparison: Was the product compared with placebo, usual care, another product, or nothing at all?
- Outcome: Was the study measuring a symptom, function, health event, laboratory marker, or merely absorption?
- Magnitude: How large was the difference, how uncertain was it, and would a person consider it worthwhile?
If the advertisement cannot answer those questions, it has not necessarily proven itself false. It has failed to make itself meaningfully evaluable.
Separate product evidence from borrowed evidence
Wellness claims often borrow credibility across categories. Ingredient research becomes product research. Mechanism becomes outcome. Animal data becomes human benefit. Absorption becomes effectiveness. Tradition becomes safety. Patents become proof. Reviews become causation. Credentials become trial results.
Write down what the evidence actually establishes before allowing it to travel. A cell study may show a plausible mechanism. An animal study may justify further research. A human biomarker study may show biological activity. A controlled clinical trial may estimate an effect on an outcome. Each can be valuable, but they are not interchangeable.
Examine the denominator and the alternative
Relative numbers attract attention: twice as bioavailable, 30 percent improvement, hundreds of benefits. Always ask for the baseline and absolute difference. A change from one unit to two is a 100 percent increase; whether it matters depends on what the units represent and where they sit in relation to a meaningful threshold.
Then compare the product with the real alternative. If a supplement fills a nutrient gap, could a simpler single-nutrient product do so at lower cost? If a powder claims to support health through vitamins and minerals, would food, fortified food, or a conventional multivitamin address the same need? If the outcome is symptom relief, is there a better-supported assessment or treatment?
A product can produce some effect and still be poor value.
Look for boundaries, not just benefits
Credible communication identifies who should not use a product, potential interactions, uncertainty, adverse effects, limitations of the evidence, and the difference between general education and medical treatment. Marketing tends to present uncertainty as friction. In science, uncertainty is part of the result.
The FDA disclaimer on structure/function claims is easy to skim past, but it signals an important boundary: the agency has not evaluated the claim, and the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. The disclaimer does not mean the product is ineffective. It means consumers should not mistake the appearance of the label for premarket approval of the claimed benefit.
The eight-question claim check
Before buying, sharing, or building a health decision around a wellness claim, ask:
- What is the exact claim, including what the images and testimonials imply?
- What does each vague word mean in measurable terms?
- Was this exact finished product tested?
- Was it tested at the sold dose in people like those being targeted?
- Was the comparison credible and the outcome meaningful?
- How large was the benefit in absolute terms?
- What risks, limitations, funding relationships, and uncertainties were omitted?
- Is this better than the simpler, cheaper, or better-supported alternative?
This process does not require consumers to become biostatisticians. It requires advertisers to stop receiving credit for information they did not provide.
The final question for the entire series is simple: It sounded like information. But what did it actually tell you?
